Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Marrakech to Zagora via Ait Benhaddou and Draa Valley
Depart Marrakech early and climb the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 metres) β Morocco's highest paved road, engineered by the French Foreign Legion in the 1930s across sheer rock faces and alpine snowfields. Stop at Telouet Kasbah: the crumbling former palace of Pasha T'hami el Glaoui, the powerful feudal lord who ruled southern Morocco under the French Protectorate until the 1950s, its painted ceilings and carved stucco now half-open to the sky in dramatic romantic decay. Descend to Ait Benhaddou β the UNESCO World Heritage ksar of ancient mud-brick towers occupied since the 9th century as a Saharan caravan waypoint, and the filming location for Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones, and Jewel of the Nile. Cross the stepping stones over the Oued Mellah and climb through the ksar. Continue south through the Draa Valley β a 150-kilometre natural corridor of date palms following the Draa River south from the High Atlas to the edge of the Sahara, one of the most dramatic agricultural landscapes in Africa. Arrive in Zagora, a dusty market town whose famous road sign reading "Tomboctou 52 Jours" (Timbuktu 52 days by camel) marks the beginning of the Saharan world. Overnight at a traditional riad.
Day 2
Zagora to Erg Chigaga via Tamegroute
Drive south from Zagora to Tamegroute β a remote desert village and one of Morocco's most important centres of Islamic learning, home to the Zaouia Nacirya library. Founded in the 17th century, the library holds over 4,000 manuscripts β Koranic commentaries, astrology texts, mathematical treatises, and illuminated manuscripts on gazelle skin dating back 900 years β making it one of the most significant collections of Islamic scholarship in Africa. Also in Tamegroute, visit the famous green pottery cooperatives: the distinctive sage-green glaze is produced using manganese oxide, a technique unique to this area and dating to the arrival of Andalusian potters centuries ago. Continue past the village of M'Hamid el-Ghizlane β the last settlement before the open Sahara β where the paved road ends and the desert begins. Board 4x4 vehicles for the 45-minute drive across pure Saharan terrain to Erg Chigaga: a vast, road-free sand sea over 40 kilometres long and up to 300 metres high, one of Morocco's largest and most remote dune systems. Mount your camel for a sunset trek to your luxury desert camp deep in the dunes, surrounded by silence and an extraordinary night sky far from any light pollution.
Day 3
Erg Chigaga, Lake Iriqui, and Return to Marrakech
Wake before sunrise to climb the highest nearby dune β in the silence of Erg Chigaga, with no other camps or vehicles visible in any direction, the dawn display is among the most spectacular in Morocco. Return for a Berber breakfast at camp and begin the journey north. The return route crosses the seasonal Lake Iriqui β a vast inland salt flat that fills with shallow water following winter rains, creating a mirror-like surface across which the 4x4 drives in one of Morocco's most surreal off-road experiences. In the dry season, the flat cracked mud of the lakebed extends to the horizon as a perfectly level white plain. Pass through Taznakht, a small town in the Anti-Atlas known across Morocco for its high-quality Berber carpet workshops: the bold geometric patterns and natural wool dyes of Taznakht's weavers are distinct from any other Moroccan weaving tradition, and the weekly souk brings carpet traders from across the southern region. Continue north over the Anti-Atlas and High Atlas foothills, through Ouarzazate, and over the Tizi n'Tichka Pass back to Marrakech, arriving by evening.
