If you have one week in Morocco, the classic Fez–Sahara–Marrakech route covers the three experiences that most visitors come here for: the ancient medina of Fez (one of the best-preserved medieval cities on earth), the golden dunes and desert camps of Merzouga, and the electric energy of Marrakech. Here is how we structure this route for our private clients, and why each day is designed the way it is.

Day 1 — Arrive Fez. Settle into your riad in the medina and take an evening stroll through the illuminated streets near Bab Boujloud. The Blue Gate at night, with the minarets lit above the rooftops, is a perfect first impression of Morocco. Keep the evening simple — mint tea, a light dinner, early bed. The medina will still be there in the morning.

Day 2 — Fez Medina Full Day. This is one of the great days of any Morocco trip. With a licensed local guide (essential — the medina genuinely requires one), you will visit the Bou Inania Madrasa (14th century carved plasterwork and cedar screens), the Chouara Tannery (best viewed from the leather shop terraces above), the Al-Attarine spice market, the Andalusian Quarter across the river, and the Nejjarine fountain and woodworking museum. Allow seven hours. Lunch at a traditional Moroccan restaurant inside the medina. End the day at Cafe Clock for a rooftop sunset view.

Day 3 — Fez to Merzouga via Middle Atlas. An early departure (7am) is essential to make this drive comfortably. The route heads south through the Middle Atlas Mountains, pausing in Ifrane — the alpine town known as the Switzerland of Morocco — and the cedar forest of Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques approach the road. Continue through the Ziz Valley, lined with thousands of date palms, descending toward the ochre plains of the southeast. Arrive in Merzouga late afternoon just in time to mount your camel for a sunset trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Day 4 — Sahara Day. Wake before dawn to watch the sun rise over the dunes — a genuinely life-altering 15 minutes of silence and changing light. Return by camel for breakfast, then spend the morning exploring Rissani market and nearby Berber villages. In the afternoon, options include quad biking on the dunes, a visit to a nomadic family, or simply resting in the shade of the camp with tea. A second night in the desert camp is strongly recommended for anyone with the schedule — the Milky Way visible from the Sahara is extraordinary.

Day 5 — Merzouga to Ouarzazate via Todra Gorge. Head west through the dramatic Dades Valley, stopping at Todra Gorge — a narrow canyon where 300-metre limestone walls rise from a cool river. The gorge walk takes about 90 minutes and is one of the most spectacular short hikes in Morocco. Continue through the rose-growing region of the Dades Valley, past ancient kasbahs, to Ouarzazate for the night.

Day 6 — Ait Benhaddou and the High Atlas. Morning visit to Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO World Heritage ksar that served as a film location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. A local guide leads you through the mud-brick towers and explains the history of this 11th-century fortified village. Then north over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 metres), Morocco's highest paved road, with panoramic views in every direction. Arrive Marrakech by late afternoon.

Day 7 — Marrakech. The contrast between the ancient north and the modern south of Morocco hits you on this final day. Djemaa el-Fna square by morning — orange juice vendors, storytellers, acrobats. The souks by midday — leather workers, spice merchants, carpet weavers. Bahia Palace and Saadian Tombs in the afternoon. Dinner at a rooftop restaurant above the square as the evening call to prayer echoes across the city. This is Morocco at its most theatrical, and the perfect final image to carry home.
