Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Marrakech
Arrive at Marrakech Menara Airport β named after the 12th-century Agdal Gardens visible from the runway β and your private driver-guide welcomes you for a transfer to your riad in the historic medina. Spend the first evening at leisure in the winding lantern-lit lanes of the old city. As dusk falls, make your way to Jemaa el-Fna square, where storytellers, Gnaoua musicians, henna artists, acrobats, and steam rising from food stalls create one of the world's most extraordinary communal evening spectacles β a tradition that has continued every night for over a thousand years, recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage.
Day 2
Guided Tour of Marrakech Medina
A full guided day in Marrakech's UNESCO-listed medina with a local guide. Begin at the 19th-century Bahia Palace β the 160-room complex of Grand Vizier Ahmed ibn Moussa, its courtyards of fountains, orange trees, and ceilings of hand-painted cedarwood representing the pinnacle of Moroccan palace architecture. Visit the Saadian Tombs, a 16th-century royal necropolis of 66 tombs sealed by Sultan Moulay Ismail for 300 years and only rediscovered in 1917; the central chamber's carved stucco and Carrara marble are among the finest in Moroccan art. Walk to the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque whose 70-metre Almohad minaret β visible from 30 km away β served as the architectural model for Seville's Giralda and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. Explore the specialised souks: spice traders in Rahba Kedima, metalworkers hammering copper in Souk Semmarine, and leather dyers in the tanners' lane.
Day 3
Marrakech to Boumalne Dades via Ait Benhaddou
Depart Marrakech through Berber villages of the High Atlas foothills, ascending the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m) β built by the French Foreign Legion in 1936 through some of North Africa's most challenging terrain. Stop at the crumbling atmospheric Telouet Kasbah β the once-magnificent palace of Pasha T'hami el Glaoui, the most powerful non-royal figure in Moroccan history, who collaborated with the French and died in 1956 leaving his palace to ruin. Descend to visit the UNESCO World Heritage ksar of Ait Benhaddou with a local guide; cross the Oued Mellah to explore the interconnected mud-brick kasbahs used as a film location for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones. Continue through Ouarzazate's Kasbah Taourirt, the Skoura palm oasis, and the Rose Valley of Kalaat Mgouna β where 4,000 tonnes of Damask rose petals are harvested annually for the global perfume industry β before arriving in the Dades Valley.
Day 4
Boumalne Dades to Merzouga via Todra Gorge
Explore the Dades Gorges in the morning β walk the gorge where "Monkey Fingers" limestone formations rise above a river lined with almond and walnut trees, and ancient kasbahs in various states of preservation line the valley walls. Continue east to Todra Gorge: one of the most dramatic slot canyons in North Africa, where 300-metre limestone walls rise sheer from a clear river and the temperature drops several degrees in the deep canyon shadow. The gorge was first climbed by European mountaineers in the 1960s and remains a world-class rock climbing destination. Pass through Erfoud's fossil marble workshops and Rissani's ancient covered market β the Souk El Had, one of southern Morocco's most authentic traditional markets, held three times weekly β before arriving in Merzouga. Mount your camel in the late afternoon for a sunset trek into the towering Erg Chebbi dunes to your luxury Berber camp, where a traditional tagine feast and live Berber drumming await under an extraordinary desert sky.
Day 5
Merzouga Desert to Marrakech via Draa Valley
Rise before dawn to climb a dune crest and watch the Sahara sunrise transform the Erg from deep indigo to brilliant gold, the shadows of the dunes stretching across the sand sea in the low light. After a nomad-style breakfast of Berber omelette and mint tea, optional quad biking on the Erg Chebbi dunes before departure. Return to Marrakech via the spectacular Draa Valley β Morocco's longest river valley at 1,100 km, lined with the country's most beautiful date palm oases and ancient ksars. The road winds through the Ait Saoun Mountains past kasbahs, palm gardens, and remote Berber settlements. Arrive in Marrakech by evening, the rose-pink pisΓ© walls of the medina glowing in the last light.
Day 6
Day Trip to Essaouira
Drive west through argan forests on a road flanked by the only argan trees in the world (Argania spinosa, native exclusively to Morocco's Souss region), with a stop at a women's argan oil cooperative to learn the traditional extraction process and taste amlou β a Berber paste of argan oil, roasted almonds, and honey. Arrive in Essaouira, the "Wind City of Africa" β a UNESCO World Heritage medina built by Mohammed III in the 18th century to a French military engineer's plan, giving it an unusually rational grid quite unlike any other Moroccan medina. Explore the Skala de la Ville sea walls, lined with 18th-century Portuguese cannons trained over the Atlantic, and the Skala du Port overlooking the busy fishing fleet. Browse the medina lanes of galleries, craftspeople producing thuya wood marquetry (a craft unique to this region using the thuya tree only found here), and blue-painted artisan workshops. Enjoy a plate of freshly grilled sardines at the port β the freshest in Morocco β before returning to Marrakech.
Day 7
Departure from Marrakech
A final morning in Marrakech before departure: visit the Majorelle Garden β 2.5 acres of exotic plants from five continents designed by French painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and later owned by Yves Saint Laurent, its iconic cobalt-blue buildings and terracotta pathways one of the most photographed spaces in Morocco. Browse the last of the medina souks for spices, argan oil, ceramics, or leather goods. Private transfer to Marrakech Menara Airport to conclude your 7-day Moroccan desert adventure.
