Todra Gorge

Where 300-metre walls of rock meet a clear mountain river

About Todra Gorge

Carved over millennia by the Todra River as it descends from the High Atlas toward the Sahara, the Todra Gorge reaches its most dramatic point at a section just 10 metres wide — a narrow slot of soaring rock where the sky is reduced to a thin strip of blue above. Even on the hottest desert days, the canyon floor remains cool and shaded, with the river running clear and cold between smooth boulders.

The approach through the Tinghir palm grove is itself spectacular — a vast ribbon of green cutting through the barren pre-Saharan plain. The town of Tinghir, perched above the oasis on a rocky promontory, has a magnificent kasbah and a Thursday souk that draws Amazigh traders from across the region. As the road enters the gorge, it passes through a series of villages and gardens where roses are grown for the rosewater trade.

Rock climbers from across Europe travel specifically to the Todra Gorge, which offers more than 150 established routes on its limestone faces. But you need no technical skills to experience the gorge's grandeur: a short walk from the carpark takes you into the narrowest and most awe-inspiring section, while longer hiking routes lead deeper into the mountains toward the Dades Valley over high passes. The gorge is most magical at dawn, when shafts of early light angle down through the canyon walls.

What to See & Do

📍 The Narrow Section

The most dramatic part of the gorge — just 10 metres wide, with 300-metre walls of rose-gold limestone towering overhead.

📍 Todra River

A clear, cold mountain stream flowing year-round through the gorge floor — perfect for cooling off on hot desert days.

📍 Rock Climbing

Over 150 established climbing routes on the limestone walls — one of North Africa's finest climbing destinations.

📍 Tinghir Palm Grove

A vast oasis stretching below the gorge — one of the most lush and extensive palm groves in southern Morocco.

📍 Berber Villages

A string of traditional Amazigh villages in the gorge approach, with rose gardens, kasbahs, and working flour mills.

📍 Sunrise in the Canyon

Dawn light angling down through the canyon walls creates extraordinary photographic conditions — arrive early for the best experience.

Tours Departing from Todra

Private Day Trip from Marrakech to Essaouira — 1-day private tour from Todra Gorge, Morocco1 Days

Day Trip: Marrakech → Essaouira

Essaouira is 2.5 hours from Marrakech — close enough for a comfortable day trip, different enough to feel like another world. Where Marrakech is intense, labyrinthine, and landlocked, Essaouira is breezy, grid-planned, and Atlantic-facing. Its UNESCO-listed medina was built in 1764 by French military engineer Théodore Cornut to a rational plan completely unlike any other Moroccan medina. The Alizé trade winds that blow most afternoons make it one of the world's premier kitesurfing destinations and keep the air permanently cool and salt-fresh. The drive passes through the Argania spinosa argan forest — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that grows naturally only in Morocco's Souss-Massa region.

Marrakech City Guided Tour — Private Half Day & Full Day — 1-day private tour from Todra Gorge, Morocco1 Days

Marrakech City Guided Tour — Half Day & Full Day

Marrakech's UNESCO-listed medina is one of the most visited and most disorienting places in the world. The winding lanes, the noise, the intensity of the souks — it is exhilarating but overwhelming without someone who genuinely knows the city. Our guides don't just know the sites; they know the stories behind the doors, the craftsmen by name, and which stall makes the best orange juice on Jemaa el-Fna. Choose the half-day tour for a focused 4-hour introduction covering Marrakech's essential monuments, or the full-day tour adding Ben Youssef Madrasa, Majorelle Gardens, the Mellah, and ending at Jemaa el-Fna as the square comes alive in the late afternoon.

Private Day Trip from Marrakech to Atlas Mountains & Berber Villages — 1-day private tour from Todra Gorge, Morocco1 Days

Day Trip: Marrakech → Atlas Mountains & Berber Villages

The High Atlas Mountains rise dramatically to 4,167 metres just 60 kilometres from Marrakech's Jemaa el-Fna. In a single day you can move from the heat and noise of the Red City into a world of snow-capped peaks, terraced gardens, rushing rivers, and Berber villages where the way of life has changed little in centuries. This private day trip takes you into the heart of the High Atlas via the Ourika Valley — the most beautiful and accessible of the Atlas valleys — and includes a visit with a Berber family in their home, the kind of authentic encounter that simply doesn't happen in the city.
