Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Marrakech to Dades Valley via Ait Benhaddou
Depart Marrakech and ascend the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m) β Morocco's highest paved mountain road, engineered by the French Foreign Legion in 1936 across sheer rock faces and alpine snowfields. Sweeping panoramic views extend over ridge after ridge of Atlas ranges from the summit. Descend to visit the UNESCO World Heritage ksar of Ait Benhaddou β a 1,500-year-old fortified village of sun-dried mud-brick towers on the ancient caravan route linking Timbuktu to Marrakech, and the film location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and Babel. Cross the Oued Mellah on stepping stones and explore the six interconnected kasbahs with a local guide. Continue east past Ouarzazate through the Rose Valley of Kalaat Mgouna β where fields of damask roses perfume the spring air β and the Dades Valley's dramatic canyon landscape. Overnight in the Dades Valley amid earthen kasbahs and canyon views.
Day 2
Dades Valley to Merzouga via Todra Gorge
Begin the morning exploring the Dades Gorges where the iconic "Monkey Fingers" rock formations β pale limestone towers sculpted by differential erosion into extraordinary organic finger-like pillars β rise dramatically above the valley floor. Continue east to Todra Gorge, where 300-metre limestone walls rise sheer above a cool, shallow river in a canyon barely 10 metres wide at its narrowest β one of Morocco's most dramatic natural wonders and a premier rock-climbing destination. Walk the gorge corridor in the deep canyon shade, feeling the temperature drop noticeably in the shadow of the towering cliffs. Press on through Erfoud's fossil marble workshops and Rissani's ancient souk β birthplace of the Alaouite royal dynasty. Arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon and mount your camel for a sunset trek across the golden Erg Chebbi dunes to your luxury Berber camp, with a traditional feast of tagine and couscous and live drumming under the extraordinary desert stars.
Day 3
Merzouga Sunrise and Return to Marrakech
Rise before dawn to watch the Sahara sunrise transform the Erg Chebbi dunes from deep indigo through amber to brilliant gold β an extraordinary spectacle of colour and shadow across the vast sand sea. After a nomad-style breakfast of Berber omelette, fresh khobz, honey, and mint tea, travel back west through the Draa Valley, passing ancient kasbahs and date palm oasis corridors, stopping at Ait Benhaddou for a second visit or brief photograph in the morning light. Cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass to return to Marrakech with the colours and silences of the Sahara still vivid in memory.
