Morning pickup from your Tangier hotel and a drive through the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen. Spend the afternoon walking the blue medina: Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the Kasbah and its gardens, the Grand Mosque, and the Ras el-Maa spring and old wool-washing quarter. Chefchaouen → Volubilis → Moulay Idriss → Meknes

Drive south out of the Rif toward the Roman and Amazigh heartland. Explore Volubilis, the ruined Roman provincial capital whose mosaic floors, some of the best-preserved in North Africa, still depict Hercules' labors and Orpheus charming the animals. Continue to Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, the hillside town built around the tomb of Idriss I, the 8th-century founder of Morocco's first Islamic dynasty, and one of the country's holiest pilgrimage sites. Finish in Meknes, where Sultan Moulay Ismail built a capital on a scale meant to rival Versailles: walk through Bab Mansour, the monumental 1732 gate considered the finest in Morocco, and the vast royal stables and granaries of Heri es-Souani.
