5 Day Private Tour from Tangier to Fez — Northern Morocco
Tour Overview
Not every Morocco traveller wants the Sahara. Some come specifically for the north — for the Andalusian architecture of Tangier, the Atlantic charm of Asilah, the impossibly photogenic blue lanes of Chefchaouen, and the medieval labyrinth of Fez. This private 5-day tour covers northern Morocco in depth, without rushing south to the desert. It is the ideal itinerary for travellers arriving by ferry from Spain or Gibraltar, or those who have already done the south and want to explore a completely different Morocco. Ending in Fez — the spiritual and intellectual capital of the country — it also pairs naturally as the start of any southbound journey.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Tangier: City Tour and Arrival
Private airport or port pickup in Tangier. Guided tour of Tangier with a licensed local guide — the ancient Kasbah and its palace museum with panoramic views over the Strait of Gibraltar where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean; the medina's Grand Socco and Petit Socco squares, historic meeting places of the Beat Generation writers; the American Legation — the oldest US diplomatic property in the world and the only US National Historic Landmark outside American territory; Cap Spartel lighthouse at the northernmost tip of Africa; and the Hercules Caves where legend says Hercules rested before performing his labours, their cave mouth shaped like the African continent in silhouette.
Day 2
Tangier → Asilah → Chefchaouen
Drive south along the Atlantic coast to Asilah — the jewel of Morocco's northern coast, a whitewashed Portuguese-walled medina established in the 15th century, famous for its annual arts festival that transforms the medina walls into open-air murals by Moroccan and international artists. Walk the ramparts over the Atlantic, explore the Hassan II Mosque with its ornate minaret, and wander the artisan lanes of the medina where galleries and craft shops occupy beautifully restored Portuguese-era buildings. Continue into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen — the legendary Blue Pearl of Morocco — arriving in time to wander the medina as evening light transforms the indigo walls.
Day 3
Full Day in Chefchaouen
A full day to experience Chefchaouen properly. Begin with a sunrise hike to the Spanish Mosque above the town — a 45-minute ascent rewarded with panoramic views over the blue rooftops and the Rif Mountains at their most photogenic. Explore the 15th-century Kasbah and its small ethnographic museum, the Great Mosque with its unusual octagonal minaret, the central Uta el-Hammam square, and the artisan workshops selling handwoven wool djellabas, natural-dye leather goods, and local goat cheese unique to the region. Optional afternoon excursion to the Akchour waterfalls and natural pools in the Talassemtane National Park — a series of dramatic cascades through forested limestone gorges that most visitors to Chefchaouen never discover. Evening at leisure in the medina.
Day 4
Chefchaouen → Volubilis → Meknes → Fez
Drive south out of the Rif Mountains to Volubilis — Morocco's finest Roman archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage landmark above the Khoumane Valley. A local guide brings alive the intact mosaic floors depicting Orpheus charming the animals, the Triumphal Arch of Caracalla, the Capitol temple, and the ancient olive presses. Visit Moulay Idriss Zerhoun — the holiest town in Morocco, burial place of Moulay Idriss I who founded Morocco's first Islamic state in the 8th century. Stop in Meknes for the monumental Bab Mansour gateway — its facade an extraordinary mosaic of green and white zellige tilework — and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the 17th-century sultan who made Meknes his imperial capital and built 40 km of ramparts. Arrive in Fez for the evening.
Day 5
Full Day in Fez Medina
Full day in Fez el-Bali — the world's largest car-free urban area and a UNESCO World Heritage site — with a licensed local guide who grew up inside the medina. Royal Palace gates, Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Qarawiyyin University (founded 859 AD — the world's oldest continuously operating degree-granting institution, predating Oxford by over 300 years), Nejjarine woodworking museum, Pottery Village, Chouara Tanneries rooftop view, and the Mellah Jewish Quarter. The tour ends in Fez. Private airport or train station transfer as required.
