Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate
Pickup from your Marrakech riad. Cross the High Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka at 2,260 metres — switchbacks with views north to the Haouz Plain and south toward the pre-Saharan plateau. Stop at Ait Benhaddou: the UNESCO ksar of mud-brick kasbahs above the Ounila River, inhabited since the 11th century. Climb to the summit agadir for panoramic views. Continue to Ouarzazate for the night.
Day 2
Ouarzazate → Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga
Drive east through the Dades Valley — the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs — walking among abandoned pisé towers and photographing the Monkey Fingers rock formations. Continue to the Todra Gorge: 300-metre limestone walls narrowing to 10 metres, the river cold and clear below. Drive across the Tafilalet oasis to Merzouga. Your camel waits as the sun drops — a two-hour trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes to your private luxury desert camp.
Day 3
Merzouga — Full Desert Day: Dunes, Rissani, and Second Sunset
Watch the Erg Chebbi sunrise from the dune crest. After camp breakfast, explore the area with your guide: the Gnawa music community in nearby Khamlia — descendants of West African pilgrims — and the Wednesday market at Rissani, the most authentic traditional market in the Saharan south and the historic crossroads of the old trans-Saharan caravan route. Return to the dunes for a second sunset: sandboard on the slip faces or walk the high crests. Second night at the camp or a village riad.
Day 4
Merzouga → Ait Benhaddou → Marrakech
Early start west through Ouarzazate, with an optional stop at Ait Benhaddou in the morning light — its warm ochre pisé walls photographed better at this hour than in afternoon. Cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass heading north — the Atlas from the south in morning light is a different experience to day one. Arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon.
