Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Marrakech β Telouet β Ait Benhaddou β Dades Valley
Ascend Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m) β the highest paved mountain road in Morocco β with panoramic Atlas views. Stop at Telouet Kasbah, the lost palace of Pasha Glaoui left to ruin after independence, its painted cedarwood ceilings and carved stucco salons dissolving back into the earth. Visit Ait Benhaddou (UNESCO) β backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia β and explore the six interconnected mud-brick kasbahs representing 1,500 years of caravan trade history. Continue through Ouarzazate, Rose Valley, and Skoura palm oasis to the Dades Valley.
Day 2
Dades Valley β Todra Gorge β Merzouga
Morning visit to the Monkey Fingers rock formations in the Dades Gorges β pale limestone towers sculpted by differential erosion into extraordinary organic pillar shapes rising above a valley of walnut and almond trees. Drive to Todra Gorge where 300-metre limestone walls narrow to barely 10 metres around a cold, clear river flowing from High Atlas snowmelt β walk the full length of the canyon floor. Continue through Erfoud and ancient Rissani souk to Merzouga for a sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. Luxury Berber camp dinner and campfire drumming under a starlit sky.
Day 3
Sahara Sunrise β Middle Atlas β Fez
Rise before dawn and climb a dune crest to watch the Sahara sunrise β the sky shifting from deep indigo through amber and copper to brilliant gold. Drive north through the Ziz Valley, a 70-km ribbon of tens of thousands of date palms threading through ochre canyon walls. Continue through Azrou's cedar forest with wild Barbary macaques β the only primates indigenous to Africa north of the Sahara β and through alpine Ifrane at 1,665 metres before descending into Fez.
Day 4
Full Day in Fez Medina
Full day in Fez el-Bali β the world's largest car-free urban area and a UNESCO World Heritage site β with a licensed local guide. Royal Palace gates, Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Qarawiyyin University (founded 859 AD β the world's oldest continuously operating degree-granting institution, predating Oxford by over 300 years), Nejjarine woodworking museum, Pottery Village, Chouara Tanneries rooftop view, and the Mellah Jewish Quarter.
Day 5
Fez β Volubilis β Meknes β Chefchaouen
Stops at Volubilis (UNESCO) β intact mosaic floors depicting Orpheus charming the animals, the Triumphal Arch of Caracalla, and ancient olive presses that once supplied Rome with North African oil, brought alive by a local guide. Visit Meknes for the monumental Bab Mansour gateway and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the 17th-century sultan who built 40 km of ramparts. Continue north into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen.
Day 6
Chefchaouen β Rabat β Casablanca
Morning exploration of Chefchaouen's medina β the 15th-century Kasbah and its small ethnographic museum, the Great Mosque with its unusual octagonal minaret, Uta el-Hammam square, and artisan workshops. Drive south to Rabat β Hassan Tower, Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the 17th-century Oudaya Kasbah with panoramic Atlantic views. Continue to Casablanca for a final visit to Hassan II Mosque β one of the world's largest mosques, built over the Atlantic with a 210-metre minaret and retractable glass roof. Drop-off at your Casablanca accommodation.
