Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Marrakech Arrival & Medina
Arrive in Marrakech and settle into your riad in the historic medina. Guided tour of Marrakech's UNESCO-listed medina: Bahia Palace β the 19th-century 160-room complex of carved cedarwood ceilings and patterned zellige tilework β the Saadian Tombs sealed for 300 years, the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque, specialised souks, and the legendary Jemaa el-Fna square with its storytellers, Gnaoua musicians, and food stalls.
Day 2
Marrakech β Telouet β Ait Benhaddou β Dades Valley
Ascend the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m) with panoramic Atlas views extending in both directions. Stop at Telouet Kasbah β the atmospheric ruins of Pasha Glaoui's palace, its carved stucco salons dissolving slowly back into the earth. Visit Ait Benhaddou (UNESCO) β backdrop for Gladiator and Game of Thrones β and explore the six interconnected mud-brick kasbahs representing 1,500 years of caravan trade history. Continue through Ouarzazate, the Skoura palm oasis, and Rose Valley to the Dades Valley.
Day 3
Dades Valley β Todra Gorge β Merzouga
Morning at the Monkey Fingers rock formations in the Dades Gorges β pale limestone towers sculpted by differential erosion into extraordinary organic pillar shapes. Drive to Todra Gorge where 300-metre limestone walls narrow to barely 10 metres around a cold, clear river β walk the full length of the canyon floor. Continue through Erfoud and ancient Rissani souk to Merzouga for a sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. Luxury Berber camp dinner and live campfire drumming under a starlit sky.
Day 4
Sahara Sunrise β Middle Atlas β Fez
Rise before dawn and climb a dune crest for the Sahara sunrise β the sky transforming from deep indigo through copper and amber to brilliant gold as the first light sweeps across the Erg Chebbi. Drive north through the Ziz Valley, a 70-km ribbon of tens of thousands of date palms threading through ochre canyon walls. Continue through Azrou's cedar forest where wild Barbary macaques roam freely, and through the alpine resort of Ifrane at 1,665 metres before descending into Fez.
Day 5
Full Day in Fez Medina
Full day in Fez el-Bali β the world's largest car-free urban area and a UNESCO World Heritage site β with a licensed local guide. Royal Palace gates, Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Qarawiyyin University (founded 859 AD β the world's oldest continuously operating degree-granting institution, predating Oxford by over 300 years), Nejjarine woodworking museum, Pottery Village, Chouara Tanneries rooftop view, and the Mellah Jewish Quarter established in 1438.
Day 6
Fez β Volubilis β Meknes β Chefchaouen
Drive west with stops at Volubilis (UNESCO) β intact mosaic floors depicting Orpheus charming the animals, the Triumphal Arch of Caracalla, and ancient olive presses that once supplied Rome with North African oil. A local guide brings the ruins alive. Visit Meknes for the monumental Bab Mansour gateway and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Continue north into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen.
Day 7
Full Day in Chefchaouen
A full day to explore Chefchaouen at leisure β the 15th-century Kasbah and its small ethnographic museum, the Great Mosque with its unusual octagonal minaret, the Uta el-Hammam central square, and artisan workshops selling handwoven wool, natural-dye leather, and hand-painted ceramics. Optional half-day excursion to the Akchour waterfalls in the Talassemtane National Park for those who enjoy hiking in dramatic mountain river gorges.
Day 8
Chefchaouen β Rabat β Casablanca
Drive south to Rabat, Morocco's serene capital β visit the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Morocco's finest modern architectural landmark, and the 17th-century Oudaya Kasbah perched above the Bou Regreg estuary with panoramic Atlantic views. Continue to Casablanca for a final visit to Hassan II Mosque β one of the world's largest mosques, built over the Atlantic Ocean with a 210-metre minaret and a retractable glass roof that floods the marble interior with Atlantic light. Evening drop-off at your Casablanca accommodation.
