4 Day Erg Chigaga Desert Tour from Marrakech via Draa Valley

⏱ 4 Days Β· 3 NightsπŸš— Private TourπŸ“ Marrakech β†’ MarrakechπŸ“… Available Year-round

Tour Overview

Erg Chigaga is not Erg Chebbi. Where Merzouga is accessible by paved road and lined with hotels, Erg Chigaga β€” over 40 kilometres long and rising to 300 metres β€” can only be reached by 4x4 across open piste. There are no roads into the heart of it. The camps here are small, the sky is enormous, and the silence is absolute. This is what the Sahara looked like before tourism arrived. The 4-day route from Marrakech follows the Draa Valley β€” Morocco's great oasis corridor, the ancient trans-Saharan caravan route along which gold, salt, and spices moved for centuries β€” before turning southwest into terrain that most Morocco tours never reach.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day1

Day 1

Marrakech β†’ Ait Benhaddou β†’ Agdz β†’ Draa Valley

Cross the High Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m). Visit Ait Benhaddou β€” the UNESCO World Heritage ksar whose mud-brick towers above the Oued Mellah have served as a backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia, representing 1,500 years of trans-Saharan trade history. Continue south to Agdz, gateway to the Draa Valley, and visit the ancient Tamnougalt kasbah β€” one of the finest examples of pisΓ© (rammed earth) fortified architecture in southern Morocco, its honey-coloured towers reflected in the palm groves below. Settle into the valley for the night.

Day 2

Draa Valley β†’ Tamegroute β†’ Erg Chigaga

Drive the full length of the Draa Valley β€” a 150km corridor of date palms, mud-brick ksour, and nomadic encampments threading through ochre desert on the ancient trans-Saharan caravan route that once connected Timbuktu to Marrakech. Stop in Zagora and continue to Tamegroute, an ancient zawiya (Sufi sanctuary) founded in the 17th century housing one of Morocco's oldest Koranic libraries: manuscripts from the 13th century, hand-illuminated in iron-gall ink and kept in cedarwood boxes. Visit the cooperative of distinctive green-glazed pottery unique to this village β€” the manganese-tinged glaze developed by the craftsmen of Tamegroute for centuries. Continue by 4x4 across open piste to Erg Chigaga β€” 40km of wild, undulating sand sea with no roads and no infrastructure. Arrive at your desert camp deep in the dunes. Traditional dinner, campfire, and the silence of a desert without light pollution.

Day 3

Erg Chigaga β†’ Lake Iriqui β†’ Foum Zguid β†’ Tata

Rise before dawn for the desert sunrise β€” the sky shifting through extraordinary shades before the full force of the Saharan light arrives. After breakfast, drive east across the piste to Lake Iriqui β€” a vast seasonal salt flat that fills with water in winter and dries to a shimmering white surface in summer, reflecting the sky in every direction. Continue north to Foum Zguid and west into the Anti-Atlas β€” a range of ancient eroded mountains quite different from the High Atlas, their dark volcanic rock interspersed with almond groves and nomadic encampments β€” to Tata, a southern oasis town almost entirely off the tourist circuit.

Day 4

Tata β†’ Anti-Atlas β†’ Marrakech

Drive north through the Anti-Atlas and its almond and argan landscape, passing through Tiznit β€” the silver jewellery capital of southern Morocco famous for its traditional Amazigh metalwork β€” before ascending back over the coastal range to Marrakech. Return to your Marrakech accommodation.
