Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Fez to Merzouga via Middle Atlas
Your private driver-guide picks you up early in Fez and drives south through the Middle Atlas β Morocco's forest heartland. Stop in Ifrane, the alpine resort nicknamed the "Switzerland of Morocco," its French-built European-style chalets and manicured parks sitting at 1,665 metres amid the Atlas. Continue to Azrou's ancient cedar forest where wild Barbary macaques β the only primates indigenous to Africa north of the Sahara β inhabit the ancient Atlas cedars and approach roadside visitors with surprising sociability. Descend through the spectacular Ziz Gorges into the Ziz Valley, a 70-km ribbon of tens of thousands of date palms threading through ochre canyon walls β one of Morocco's most cinematic drives. Arrive at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in the late afternoon as the golden hour light turns the sand liquid. Mount your camel for a sunset trek into the heart of the dunes, arriving at your luxury Berber camp as the first stars appear. Traditional Moroccan tagine dinner under an open sky, followed by live Berber drum music around the campfire.
Day 2
Sahara Sunrise and Return to Fez
Rise before dawn and climb the dune crest behind your camp to watch the Sahara sunrise β the sky transforming from deep indigo through copper and amber to brilliant gold as the first light sweeps across the Erg Chebbi and the dune shadows stretch across the sand sea. Return for a nomad-style breakfast of Berber omelette, fresh khobz flatbread, honey, and mint tea. Drive north through the Ziz Valley and back up through the Middle Atlas via Midelt β Morocco's apple capital at 1,488 metres, known for its mountain honey and views of both Atlas ranges β arriving back in Fez in the early to mid afternoon.
