Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Fez to Merzouga via Middle Atlas
Depart Fez and climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains, pausing in Ifrane β a charming alpine town nicknamed the "Switzerland of Morocco," with its stone lion sculpture and European-style chalets β and the cedar forest of Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques roam freely. Continue through the rugged landscape to Midelt for a traditional lunch, then descend through the spectacular Ziz Gorges and Ziz Valley, lined with thousands of date palms weaving between ochre canyon walls. Arrive in Merzouga as the sun sets over the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Day 2
Merzouga Camel Trekking and Desert Camp
Morning visit to Rissani's ancient covered souk β birthplace of Morocco's Alaouite royal dynasty β and nearby Berber villages to experience traditional desert life. In the afternoon, mount your camel for a magical sunset trek across the golden Erg Chebbi dunes, some rising over 150 metres, to your luxury Berber camp. Enjoy a traditional dinner of tagine and couscous under a blanket of stars, accompanied by live Berber drumming around the campfire.
Day 3
Merzouga to Dades Valley via Todra Gorge
Rise early to watch the Sahara sunrise transform the Erg Chebbi dunes from deep indigo to brilliant gold, then return by camel to camp for a nomad-style breakfast of Berber omelette, fresh khobz, honey, and mint tea. Travel west through Rissani's ancient covered souk β birthplace of Morocco's Alaouite royal dynasty β to Todra Gorge, where 300-metre limestone walls rise sheer from a cool, shallow river in a canyon barely 10 metres wide at its narrowest. Walk the narrow gorge corridor in the dramatic shade of the towering cliffs, feeling the temperature drop as you enter the deep shadow. Continue westward along the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Dades Valley, stopping at the iconic "Monkey Fingers" rock formations β pale limestone towers sculpted by centuries of differential erosion into extraordinary organic finger-like pillars, some reaching 20 metres above the valley floor β and through the fragrant Rose Valley of Kalaat Mgouna, where fields of damask roses perfume the air each spring. Overnight in the Dades Valley amid ancient earthen kasbahs and canyon views.
Day 4
Dades Valley to Marrakech via Ait Benhaddou
Depart the Dades Valley and drive west, stopping to visit the UNESCO World Heritage ksar of Ait Benhaddou β a 1,500-year-old fortified village of sun-dried mud-brick towers on the ancient caravan route linking Timbuktu to Marrakech, and the film location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and Babel. Cross the Oued Mellah and explore the six interconnected kasbahs with a local guide before ascending the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m), Morocco's highest paved mountain pass. Sweeping panoramic views extend over ridge after ridge of Atlas ranges from the summit before the road descends through traditional Berber villages into the red city of Marrakech.
