Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Fez to Volubilis and Meknes
Depart Fez in the morning with your private driver-guide, heading southwest through rolling cereal plains to Volubilis — Morocco's finest Roman archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage landmark that served as the western capital of Rome's province of Mauretania Tingitana. A local licensed guide leads you through the remarkable ruins: intact mosaic floors depicting the Labors of Hercules, Bacchus and the Four Seasons, and Orpheus charming wild animals — some of the finest Roman mosaics outside Italy. Stand beneath the Triumphal Arch erected in 217 AD to honor Emperor Caracalla, and explore the Capitoline Temple once housing the cults of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva. Volubilis housed 20,000 inhabitants at its 3rd-century peak, producing olive oil and grain for Rome, and its forum, basilica, and decumanus maximus (main avenue) remain clearly legible in the landscape today. The city was gradually abandoned after the 11th century; the Arabic corruption of its Latin name over the following centuries gave rise to the Moroccan name "Walili." Continue to Meknes — Morocco's imperial city built by Sultan Moulay Ismail (r. 1672-1727), who ruled for 55 years and transformed Meknes into a rival of Versailles that contemporary European ambassadors were explicitly told to surpass in their reports to Louis XIV. Stand before the monumental Bab Mansour gateway — built in 1732 as the main ceremonial entrance to the imperial palace complex, its horseshoe arch framed by green-and-white zellige tiling and flanked by ornate marble columns removed from Volubilis itself — widely considered the finest ceremonial gate in North Africa. Visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail — the only Moroccan historical site regularly open to non-Muslim visitors — and the vast royal granaries and stables built for 12,000 horses, their vaulted brick construction still standing after 300 years. Explore the Medina of Meknes (also a UNESCO World Heritage site) and its historic souks. Return to Fez by early evening.
