Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Fez and First Medina Walk
Arrive in Fez and settle into your riad in the heart of Fez el-Bali β the world's largest car-free urban area and a UNESCO World Heritage site of 9,000 winding alleys where medieval life continues largely unchanged for 1,200 years. Take an introductory evening walk through the lantern-lit medina lanes, past copper-beaters' workshops and scented spice stalls, and enjoy a welcome dinner of harira soup and lamb tagine in your riad's candlelit courtyard.
Day 2
Full Day Fez Medina Exploration
Spend a full guided day in Fez el-Bali with a local licensed guide. Visit the Al-Qarawiyyin University (founded 859 AD, the world's oldest continuously operating university), the ornate 14th-century Bou Inania Madrasa with its carved cedarwood and zellige tilework, the golden brass gates of the Royal Palace, the Nejjarine woodworking museum, and the Mellah Jewish Quarter. View the Chouara Tanneries from a rooftop terrace overlooking honeycomb dye vats of saffron, poppy, and indigo β a process unchanged since the 11th century.
Day 3
Fez to Chefchaouen via Rif Mountains
Drive northwest into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen β Morocco's legendary Blue Pearl. The tradition of painting the medina's surfaces in shades of azure and cobalt is said to have been introduced by Jewish Andalusian refugees in the 15th century. Explore the 15th-century Kasbah and its ethnographic museum, the Uta el-Hammam central plaza, and artisan workshops producing handwoven woollen djellabas using natural plant dyes. Climb to the Spanish Mosque at sunset for panoramic views over the tiled rooftops.
Day 4
Chefchaouen to Meknes via Volubilis
Drive south to Volubilis, Morocco's finest Roman archaeological site and UNESCO World Heritage landmark. Walk among remarkably intact mosaic floors, a triumphal arch erected in 217 AD for Emperor Caracalla, and Capitoline temples β the city served as the western capital of Rome's province of Mauretania Tingitana. Continue to Meknes, the imperial city of Sultan Moulay Ismail (r. 1672-1727): stand before the monumental Bab Mansour gateway β the finest ceremonial gate in North Africa β and visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and the vast royal granaries.
Day 5
Meknes to Rabat
Continue west to Rabat, Morocco's elegant Atlantic capital. Visit the Hassan Tower β the unfinished 12th-century minaret of what would have been the world's largest mosque β and the adjacent Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Morocco's finest example of modern Moroccan architecture. Explore the ancient Bab Chellah gate leading to medieval and Roman ruins, and the 17th-century Oudaya Kasbah with its blue-and-white alleys above the panoramic Bou Regreg estuary. Evening stroll along the seafront of this gracious city.
Day 6
Rabat to Casablanca
Drive south along the Atlantic coast to Casablanca. Visit the Hassan II Mosque β one of the world's largest mosques, built partially over the Atlantic Ocean with a 210-metre minaret (the tallest religious structure on earth) and a retractable glass roof. The interior showcases the work of 10,000 Moroccan artisans: hand-carved stucco, zellige tilework, and cedar woodwork of extraordinary precision. Stroll the Corniche oceanfront boulevard for a relaxed evening overlooking the Atlantic.
Day 7
Casablanca to Marrakech via Settat Plains
Travel south through the Chaouia plains β Morocco's agricultural heartland producing wheat and sunflowers β to Marrakech, the Red City. Arrive in time to explore the legendary Jemaa el-Fna square in the late afternoon, when the great open space transforms into a theatre of storytellers, Gnaoua musicians, acrobats, snake charmers, and steaming food stalls β a thousand-year-old communal spectacle recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage. Settle into your medina riad for two nights.
Day 8
Full Day Marrakech Medina Exploration
A full guided day in Marrakech's UNESCO-listed medina. Visit the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque β whose Almohad minaret served as the architectural model for Seville's Giralda and Rabat's Hassan Tower β and the opulent 19th-century Bahia Palace, its 160 rooms showcasing carved cedar ceilings, painted stucco, and zellige tilework. Explore the Saadian Tombs, a 16th-century royal necropolis sealed by Moulay Ismail and only rediscovered in 1917, and the Majorelle Garden with its cobalt-blue buildings and exotic cacti.
Day 9
Marrakech to Merzouga via Ait Benhaddou
Depart early and visit the UNESCO World Heritage ksar of Ait Benhaddou β the iconic mud-brick fortress on the former Saharan caravan route, used as a backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Cross the High Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m) in reverse, descending through Ouarzazate before heading east through the Dades Valley. Arrive in Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes for a sunset camel trek to your luxury Berber camp.
Day 10
Merzouga Sahara Experience and Departure
Rise before dawn to watch the Sahara sunrise paint the Erg Chebbi dunes from deep indigo to brilliant gold β one of Morocco's most breathtaking spectacles. After a nomad-style breakfast of Berber omelette, fresh khobz, honey, and mint tea, explore the desert by 4x4: visit Khamlia village for a live Gnaoua music performance and meet nomadic Berber families in their traditional tents. Private transfer back to Fez airport, Marrakech, or your onward destination as required.
