Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Casablanca to Fez via Rabat, Meknes and Volubilis
Pickup from Casablanca with stops at Rabat β Hassan Tower, Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the Oudaya Kasbah perched above the Bou Regreg estuary. Continue to Volubilis (UNESCO) for the mosaic floors depicting Orpheus charming the animals, the Triumphal Arch of Caracalla, and ancient olive presses that once supplied Rome with North African oil. Stop at Meknes for the monumental Bab Mansour gateway before arriving in Fez for the evening.
Day 2
Full Day in Fez Medina
Full day in Fez el-Bali β the world's largest car-free urban area and a UNESCO World Heritage site β with a licensed local guide. Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Qarawiyyin University (founded 859 AD β the world's oldest continuously operating degree-granting institution), Nejjarine woodworking museum, Pottery Village, Chouara Tanneries rooftop view, and the Mellah Jewish Quarter established in 1438.
Day 3
Fez to Merzouga via Middle Atlas
South through Ifrane β the alpine resort nicknamed the "Switzerland of Morocco" at 1,665 metres β and Azrou's ancient cedar forest where wild Barbary macaques, the only primates indigenous to Africa north of the Sahara, inhabit the Atlas cedars and approach roadside visitors with surprising sociability. Descend through the spectacular Ziz Gorges into the Ziz Valley, a 70-km ribbon of tens of thousands of date palms threading through ochre canyon walls. Arrive at Merzouga as the afternoon light turns the Erg Chebbi dunes to liquid gold. Mount your camel for a sunset trek into the dunes. Luxury Berber camp with tagine dinner and campfire drumming.
Day 4
Sahara Sunrise β Todra Gorge β Dades Valley
Rise before dawn and climb a dune crest to watch the Sahara sunrise β the sky shifting from deep indigo through amber and copper to brilliant gold as the first light sweeps across the Erg Chebbi. Return for a nomad-style breakfast of Berber omelette, fresh khobz, honey, and mint tea. Drive west to Todra Gorge: 300-metre sheer limestone walls narrowing to barely 10 metres around a clear, cold river flowing from High Atlas snowmelt. Walk the full length of the canyon floor. Continue through the Dades Valley past the iconic Monkey Fingers rock formations β pale limestone towers sculpted by differential erosion β and ancient earthen kasbahs along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs.
Day 5
Dades to Marrakech via Ait Benhaddou and Telouet
Drive west through the Rose Valley of Kalaat Mgouna β where 4,000 tonnes of damask rose petals are harvested each May for the global perfume industry β and the Skoura palm oasis. Visit the Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate. Cross the Oued Mellah to explore Ait Benhaddou (UNESCO) β whose mud-brick towers have served as a film backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Continue to the atmospheric ruins of Telouet Kasbah, where painted cedarwood ceilings and carved stucco salons dissolve slowly back into the earth. Ascend the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m), the highest paved road in Morocco, before the final descent into Marrakech.
