Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Casablanca to Chefchaouen via Rabat
Your private driver-guide meets you at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca for a morning pickup (09:15β09:30). Before departing the city, visit the Hassan II Mosque β one of the world's largest mosques, built dramatically over the Atlantic Ocean with a 210-metre minaret (the world's tallest religious structure) that opens to reveal a laser beam pointing toward Mecca each night. Its retractable glass roof floods the marble interior with Atlantic light, and its hand-carved zellige, stucco, and cedarwood represent the pinnacle of contemporary Moroccan craftsmanship. Drive north to Rabat, Morocco's serene capital. Visit the Hassan Tower β the unfinished 12th-century minaret that would have been the world's grandest mosque β and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Morocco's finest modern architectural landmark. Explore the 17th-century Oudaya Kasbah perched above the Bou Regreg estuary with panoramic Atlantic views. Continue north into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen β the celebrated Blue Pearl of Morocco β arriving in time to wander the medina as evening light deepens the indigo walls.
Day 2
Chefchaouen to Fez via Volubilis and Meknes
Explore Chefchaouen's medina in the cool morning hours: the 15th-century Kasbah and its small ethnographic museum, the Great Mosque with its unusual octagonal minaret, the central Uta el-Hammam square, and artisan workshops selling handwoven wool, natural-dye leather, and hand-painted ceramics. Continue south to Volubilis, Morocco's finest Roman archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage landmark. A local guide brings alive the intact mosaic floors depicting Orpheus charming the animals, the Triumphal Arch of Caracalla, the Capitol temple, and the ancient olive presses that once supplied Rome with North African oil. Visit Meknes to admire the monumental Bab Mansour gateway and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the 17th-century sultan who made Meknes his imperial capital and built 40 km of ramparts. Arrive in Fez as the evening call to prayer echoes across the valley.
Day 3
Full Day in Fez Medina
A full day in Fez el-Bali β the world's largest car-free urban area and a UNESCO World Heritage site β with a licensed local guide who grew up inside the medina. Begin at the golden brass gates of the Royal Palace, then enter through Bab Bou Jeloud. Visit the 14th-century Bou Inania Madrasa, one of the finest examples of Marinid architecture in Morocco. Continue to Al-Qarawiyyin University β founded in 859 AD by Fatima al-Fihri, the world's oldest continuously operating degree-granting institution, predating Oxford by over 300 years. Visit the Nejjarine woodworking museum in a beautifully restored 18th-century funduq, and the Pottery Village where potters still throw on foot-powered wheels and fire in traditional wood kilns. Stand on a rooftop terrace overlooking the Chouara Tanneries β where the honeycomb stone vats of saffron yellow, poppy red, and indigo blue have been in continuous operation since the 11th century, processed by hand using techniques unchanged for a millennium. Explore the Mellah, Fez's historic Jewish Quarter established in 1438, and browse the covered artisan cooperatives producing embroidered textiles, copper lanterns, and fassi ceramics.
Day 4
Fez to Merzouga via Middle Atlas
Depart Fez south through the Middle Atlas. Stop in Ifrane, the alpine resort nicknamed the "Switzerland of Morocco" sitting at 1,665 metres. Continue to Azrou's ancient cedar forest where wild Barbary macaques β the only primates indigenous to Africa north of the Sahara β inhabit the ancient Atlas cedars and approach roadside visitors with surprising sociability. Descend through the spectacular Ziz Gorges into the Ziz Valley, a 70-km ribbon of tens of thousands of date palms threading through ochre canyon walls. Arrive at Merzouga as the afternoon light turns the Erg Chebbi dunes to liquid gold. Mount your camel for a two-hour sunset trek deep into the dunes β some rising 150 metres above the desert floor. Arrive at your luxury desert camp as the first stars emerge: a traditional Moroccan feast of slow-cooked tagine served under an open sky, followed by live Berber drum music around the campfire.
Day 5
Merzouga to Dades Valley via Todra Gorge
Rise before dawn and climb a dune crest to watch the Sahara sunrise β the sky shifting from deep indigo through amber and copper to brilliant gold as the first light sweeps across the Erg Chebbi. Return for a nomad-style breakfast of Berber omelette, fresh khobz, honey, and mint tea. Drive west to Todra Gorge: one of the most dramatic slot canyons in North Africa, where 300-metre sheer limestone walls close around a clear, cold river flowing from High Atlas snowmelt β the walls narrowing sometimes to barely 10 metres apart. Walk the full length of the canyon floor. Continue through the Dades Valley along the ancient caravan route past earthen kasbahs that blend perfectly with the canyon strata. Stop at the iconic Monkey Fingers rock formations: pale limestone towers sculpted by differential erosion into extraordinary organic pillar shapes rising above a valley of walnut and almond trees.
Day 6
Dades to Marrakech via Ait Benhaddou and Telouet
Drive west through the Rose Valley of Kalaat Mgouna β where 4,000 tonnes of damask rose petals are harvested each May for the global perfume industry β and the Skoura palm oasis. Visit the Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate, the largest film studio complex in the world outside Hollywood. Then cross the Oued Mellah to explore Ait Benhaddou β the UNESCO World Heritage ksar whose mud-brick towers have served as a film backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, and Lawrence of Arabia, representing 1,500 years of caravan trade history. Continue to the atmospheric ruins of Telouet Kasbah β the once-magnificent palace of Pasha Glaoui, left to ruin after independence, where painted cedarwood ceilings and carved stucco salons dissolve slowly back into the earth. Ascend the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m), the highest paved road in Morocco, with panoramic views across ridge after ridge of Atlas ranges before the final descent into Marrakech. Private drop-off at your accommodation.
