8-Day Sahara and Imperial Cities Tour from Fez
Tour Overview
This eight-day route runs the full length of the classic Morocco circuit from Fez: imperial city, Roman ruins, Middle Atlas cedar forest, Sahara dunes, southern kasbah valleys, and the High Atlas, ending in Marrakech. It covers the same ground as shorter Fez-to-Marrakech desert tours but with an extra day built in around Merzouga and the Dades and Todra valleys, enough time to see the south properly rather than simply pass through it.
Tour Highlights
- βFez el-Bali, the largest car-free urban medina in the world
- βVolubilis Roman ruins and the Middle Atlas cedar forest
- βA night in a luxury desert camp among the dunes of Erg Chebbi, Merzouga
- βTodra Gorge, 300-metre canyon walls carved by the Todra River
- βDades Valley and the Rose Valley's Damascene rose gardens
- βAit Benhaddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified ksar used in dozens of films
- βCrossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass
- βArrival in Marrakech with time to explore the medina and Jemaa el-Fna
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival and Fez el-Bali
Arrive in Fez and settle into your riad. Spend the afternoon in Fez el-Bali, the UNESCO-listed medina founded in the 9th century, visiting the Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Qarawiyyin, one of the oldest universities in the world, and the view over the Chouara tanneries.
Day 2
Fez β Ifrane β Azrou β Midelt β Merzouga
Drive south through the Middle Atlas, stopping in the alpine-style town of Ifrane and the Azrou cedar forest for a chance to see wild Barbary macaques. Continue through Midelt and the dramatic Ziz Valley gorges, reaching Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi by evening. Transfer by camel or 4WD to your desert camp for the night.
Day 3
Sahara Sunrise β Todra Gorge
Rise before dawn for sunrise over the dunes, then breakfast at the camp before returning to Merzouga. Drive to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, walking the canyon floor beneath 300-metre limestone walls.
Day 4
Dades Valley and the Rose Valley
Explore the Dades Valley, with its mud-brick kasbahs and the Monkey Fingers rock formations above the gorge. Stop in the Rose Valley at Kelaat M'Gouna, where Damascene roses are grown at altitude and processed into rosewater each May.
Day 5
Dades Valley β Ouarzazate β Ait Benhaddou
Drive west to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the south and a major film-industry hub, then on to Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage ksar of red mud-brick kasbahs that has appeared in Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones. Walk the fortified village and cross the river to the old granary at its summit.
Day 6
Ait Benhaddou β Tizi n'Tichka β Marrakech
Cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka, at 2,260 metres one of the highest paved passes in North Africa, with views over Berber villages terraced into the mountainside. Descend into the Haouz plain and arrive in Marrakech by the afternoon.
Day 7
Marrakech Medina
A full day exploring Marrakech with your guide: Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the specialized souks, and Jemaa el-Fna as it comes alive in the evening with storytellers, musicians, and food stalls.
Day 8
Departure
A last coffee on a riad rooftop overlooking the medina before your airport transfer or onward journey from Marrakech.
