Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Fez
Arrive in Fez and settle into your riad in the heart of Fez el-Bali β the world's largest car-free medieval city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The sounds of hammers on copper, the scent of woodsmoke and cumin, and the call to prayer from dozens of minarets create an immediate sense of arrival in a truly ancient place. Enjoy a welcome dinner of harira soup and a fragrant lamb tagine in your riad's candlelit courtyard while your guide introduces the week's itinerary.
Day 2
Full Day Fez Medina
A full guided day in Fez el-Bali navigating 9,000 alleys with a local licensed guide. Visit the Al-Qarawiyyin University (founded 859 AD, the world's oldest), the ornate 14th-century Bou Inania Madrasa, the Nejjarine woodworking museum, the Mellah Jewish Quarter, and the golden brass gates of the Royal Palace. View the Chouara Tanneries from a rooftop terrace: hundreds of workers stand in honeycomb stone vats dyeing leather with saffron, poppy, indigo, and henna in a process unchanged since the 11th century.
Day 3
Fez to Chefchaouen
Drive northwest through the rolling foothills of the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen β Morocco's legendary Blue Pearl. Every surface of the medina glows in shades of azure and cobalt, a tradition introduced by Jewish Andalusian refugees in the 15th century. Explore the Kasbah and its ethnographic museum, the Uta el-Hammam central square, and artisan workshops producing handwoven djellabas in natural plant dyes. Climb to the Spanish Mosque at sunset for panoramic views over the rooftops and Rif peaks.
Day 4
Chefchaouen to Meknes via Volubilis
Spend the morning in Chefchaouen's medina before driving south to Volubilis β Morocco's finest Roman archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage landmark. Walk among intact mosaic floors, a triumphal arch from 217 AD, and ancient Capitoline temple columns. Continue to Meknes, built by Sultan Moulay Ismail as a rival to Versailles: admire the monumental Bab Mansour gateway, the vast royal granaries and stables, and the ornate Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail.
Day 5
Middle Atlas Mountains to Midelt
Drive south through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas. Stop in Ifrane β a pristine alpine town of European-style chalets at 1,665 metres, known as the "Switzerland of Morocco" β then continue to Azrou's ancient cedar forest, where wild Barbary macaques roam freely and approach roadside visitors. Continue to Midelt, Morocco's apple capital nestled between the Middle and High Atlas at 1,488 metres, for a relaxed mountain overnight before tomorrow's Sahara descent.
Day 6
Midelt to Merzouga via Ziz Valley
Descend through the spectacular Ziz Gorges and into the lush Ziz Valley, a 70-km ribbon of thousands of date palms threading through terracotta canyon walls β one of Morocco's most scenic drives. Continue through Erfoud's fossil marble workshops to Merzouga. In the late afternoon, mount your camel for a sunset trek across the towering Erg Chebbi dunes β some rising over 150 metres β arriving at your luxury Berber camp for a traditional feast and campfire drumming under a brilliant sky of stars.
Day 7
Merzouga Desert Day
Rise before dawn to watch the Sahara sunrise from a dune crest β the sky transforming from deep indigo through amber to gold. After a nomad-style breakfast at camp, explore by 4x4: visit Khamlia village for a live Gnaoua music performance by descendants of sub-Saharan Africa, and share mint tea with a nomadic Berber family in their traditional goat-hair tent. Explore remote oases, fossil-rich riverbeds, and the base of the great Erg in the afternoon.
Day 8
Merzouga to Dades Valley
After sunrise breakfast in the desert, travel west from Merzouga through Rissani's ancient covered souk β the former capital of the Tafilalt and birthplace of Morocco's Alaouite dynasty, its labyrinthine market lanes smelling of dried herbs, leather, and fresh-ground spices. Drive along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, the historic trade corridor linking the Sahara to the Atlas. Stop at the dramatic Todra Gorge: 300-metre limestone walls rise sheer above a cool, shallow river in a canyon so narrow that direct sunlight reaches the floor for only a brief window each day β one of Morocco's most spectacular natural amphitheatres and a premier rock-climbing destination with over 150 established routes. Walk the cool gorge corridor in the deep shadow of the cliffs. Continue west to the Dades Valley and explore the iconic Monkey Fingers rock formations β extraordinary pale limestone towers sculpted by differential erosion, some reaching 20 metres, their organic finger-like profiles unique in North Africa.
Day 9
Dades Valley to Marrakech
Depart the Dades Valley and drive west through the Rose Valley of Kalaat Mgouna β where fields of damask roses produce around 4,000 tonnes of petals annually for the global perfume industry. Stop at the 18th-century Amridil Kasbah in Skoura: still occupied by descendants of the original family for 300 years, surrounded by one of Morocco's finest date palm oases. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage ksar of Ait Benhaddou with a local guide β explore the six interconnected mud-brick kasbahs, learn about the 1,500-year caravan trade history, and climb to the granary tower for panoramic views. Cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m). Descend into Marrakech in late afternoon.
Day 10
Marrakech Day Trip to Essaouira
Drive west through argan forests β the Argania spinosa tree grows naturally only in Morocco's Souss-Massa region and is protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve β stopping at a women's argan oil cooperative to see the traditional stone-grinding process and taste amlou. Arrive in Essaouira, the "Wind City of Africa": the UNESCO World Heritage medina was built for Sultan Mohammed III in 1764 to a rational plan by French military engineer ThΓ©odore Cornut β its unusual geometric grid and blue-and-white ramparts set it apart from every other Moroccan medina. Explore the Skala de la Ville sea walls lined with 18th-century Portuguese cannons, the busy fishing port, winding medina lanes of art galleries, and thuya wood workshops. Enjoy freshly grilled fish at the harbor. Return to Marrakech by evening.
Day 11
Marrakech Guided Tour and Departure
A full guided morning in Marrakech's UNESCO-listed medina. Visit the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque and its 70-metre Almohad minaret β the architectural model for Seville's Giralda and Rabat's Hassan Tower. Explore the opulent 19th-century Bahia Palace with its 160 rooms of hand-painted cedarwood ceilings, carved stucco, and zellige tilework. See the Saadian Tombs β a 16th-century royal necropolis of 66 tombs sealed by Sultan Moulay Ismail and only rediscovered in 1917. Navigate the specialized souks β spice traders in Rahba Kedima, copper artisans, leather dyers β before a farewell at the legendary Jemaa el-Fna square. Private transfer to Marrakech Menara Airport or hotel as required.
