Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Fez to Midelt via Middle Atlas
Depart Fez and climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping in Ifrane — a pristine alpine town of European-style chalets and manicured parks at 1,665 metres, nicknamed the "Switzerland of Morocco." Continue to the ancient cedar forest of Azrou where wild Barbary macaques roam freely among the Atlas cedars and often approach roadside visitors. Arrive in Midelt, Morocco's apple capital set between the two Atlas ranges, for an overnight rest in the mountain interior.
Day 2
Midelt to Merzouga via Ziz Valley
Descend through the dramatic Ziz Gorges and the lush Ziz Valley — a 70-km ribbon of thousands of date palms threading through ochre canyon walls, one of Morocco's most cinematic drives. Continue through Erfoud's fossil marble workshops to Merzouga, arriving as the late afternoon sun turns the Erg Chebbi dunes from gold to deep copper. Mount your camel for a sunset trek into the golden dunes to your Berber camp, where a traditional tagine dinner and live drumming await under the stars.
Day 3
Merzouga Sunrise to Todra Gorge
Rise before dawn to watch the Sahara sunrise transform the Erg Chebbi dunes from deep indigo to brilliant gold — one of Morocco's most extraordinary spectacles. After a nomad-style breakfast at camp, travel west through Rissani's ancient covered souk — birthplace of the Alaouite royal dynasty — to Todra Gorge, where sheer 300-metre limestone walls rise above a cool river. Walk the narrow canyon corridor and explore the series of deepening rock passages.
Day 4
Todra Gorge to Dades Valley via Rose Valley
Journey westward along the legendary "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" — a 150-km historic trade corridor linking the Sahara to the Atlas, its name reflecting the extraordinary density of earthen mud-brick fortresses lining the valley. Stop at the iconic "Monkey Fingers" rock formations in the Dades Gorges: pale limestone towers sculpted by millennia of differential water erosion into extraordinary organic finger-like pillars, some reaching 20 metres above the valley floor. Explore the ancient earthen kasbahs lining the valley, their mud-brick walls blending seamlessly with the canyon strata. Continue through the Rose Valley of Kalaat Mgouna, where fields of damask roses bloom between the High Atlas and the Jebel Saghro each spring, filling the valley air with fragrance. Overnight amid the Dades Valley's red canyon walls and green river terraces.
Day 5
Dades Valley to Ait Benhaddou and High Atlas Foothills
Depart the Dades Valley westward, passing through the Skoura oasis with its ancient date palms and earthen kasbahs. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage ksar of Ait Benhaddou — a 1,500-year-old fortified village of sun-dried mud-brick towers on the former caravan route connecting Timbuktu to Marrakech, serving as a film location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and Babel. With a local guide, cross the Oued Mellah and explore the six interconnected kasbahs, climbing to the upper granary tower for panoramic views over the valley and Atlas foothills. Continue north through traditional Berber villages into the High Atlas foothills for an overnight rest before tomorrow's mountain crossing.
Day 6
High Atlas Crossing to Marrakech via Tizi n'Tichka
Ascend the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m) — Morocco's highest paved mountain road, engineered by the French Foreign Legion in 1936 through some of the continent's most challenging terrain, crossing sheer rock faces and mountain snowfields. At the summit, sweeping panoramic views extend over ridge after ridge of the Atlas ranges in both directions — on clear days you can see across to the Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. Stop at traditional Berber villages along the descent, their flat-roofed homes built from the same red stone as the surrounding mountainsides, before arriving in Marrakech as the city's iconic pink-ochre pisé walls glow in the late afternoon light.
