Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day1

Day 1

Casablanca to Marrakech

Transfer from Casablanca Mohammed V Airport (or city hotel) south through the Chaouia and Haouz plains to Marrakech, the Red City β€” named for the rose-pink pisΓ© (rammed earth) used in its walls and buildings, which glow especially beautifully at sunset. Arrive and settle into your riad in the historic medina. As evening falls, make your way to the legendary Jemaa el-Fna square β€” a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity β€” where a thousand-year-old assembly of storytellers (halqa) performing in Darija, Gnaoua musicians playing guembri bass lutes and iron krakebs, acrobats, snake charmers, henna artists, and scores of steaming food stalls create one of the world's most extraordinary communal evening spectacles. This gathering has taken place every night without interruption since the city's founding. Explore the atmospheric lantern-lit medina lanes afterward β€” copper-beaters' workshops, fragrant spice stalls, and bakeries still producing msemen flatbread.

Day 2

Marrakech to Dades Valley

Ascend the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m β€” Morocco's highest paved mountain road, built by the French Foreign Legion in 1936 through some of the most challenging terrain on the continent). At the summit, panoramic views extend over ridge after ridge of Atlas ranges in both directions. Descend to visit the UNESCO World Heritage ksar of Ait Benhaddou β€” a 1,500-year-old fortified village of sun-dried mud-brick towers on the former caravan route linking Timbuktu to Marrakech, and a film location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and Babel. Explore the six interconnected kasbahs with a local guide. Continue through Ouarzazate (Atlas Film Studios) and along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through Skoura oasis to the Dades Valley, arriving as the ochre canyon walls deepen in the evening light.

Day 3

Dades Valley to Merzouga

Morning in the Dades Gorges: walk among the iconic Monkey Fingers rock formations β€” pale limestone towers sculpted by centuries of differential erosion, some reaching 20 metres β€” and explore traditional earthen kasbahs lining the valley floor, their mud-brick walls blending seamlessly with the red canyon strata. Drive east through the spectacular Todra Gorge: 300-metre limestone walls rising sheer above a cool, shallow river in a canyon sometimes less than 10 metres wide β€” one of Morocco's most dramatic natural sites and a premier rock-climbing destination with over 150 established routes. Walk the gorge corridor in the cool canyon shade, feeling the scale of the towering walls above. Continue through Erfoud's fossil marble workshops (Devonian trilobites, 350 million years old) and Rissani (birthplace of Morocco's Alaouite royal dynasty) to Merzouga. Evening camel trek at sunset into the towering Erg Chebbi dunes β€” some reaching 150 metres β€” to your luxury Berber camp, with traditional feast and live drumming.

Day 4

Full Day in Merzouga

Rise before dawn to climb a dune crest and watch the extraordinary Sahara sunrise: the sky transforms from deep indigo through amber to brilliant gold, dune shadows stretching across the sand sea as the first light sweeps in from the Algerian frontier. Return by camel for a nomad-style breakfast at camp (Berber omelette, fresh khobz, honey, amlou, mint tea). Morning 4x4 to Khamlia village for a live Gnaoua music performance β€” descendants of sub-Saharan Africans brought to Morocco through the trans-Saharan slave trade, their ritual music played on guembri bass lute and iron krakebs, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and living spiritual practice. Share mint tea with a nomadic Berber family in their traditional goat-hair tent: learn about seasonal desert migrations, animal husbandry, and oral poetry traditions passed down over generations. Afternoon: sandboarding, quad biking, or simply exploring the extraordinary base of the great Erg Chebbi sand sea. Second extraordinary night under the desert stars.

Day 5

Merzouga to Fez

After breakfast, depart Merzouga heading north through Rissani's ancient covered souk. Ascend through the Ziz Valley β€” Morocco's longest palm grove, a 70-km ribbon of thousands of date palms threading through ochre canyon walls in the Tafilalt oasis, one of Morocco's most cinematic drives. The underground khettara irrigation channels that sustain this oasis have functioned without interruption for over 1,000 years. Continue through Midelt (1,488 m, Morocco's apple capital between the two Atlas ranges). Azrou's ancient cedar forest: wild Barbary macaques β€” Africa's only primates north of the Sahara β€” roam the roadside and approach visitors. The pristine alpine town of Ifrane (1,665 m, nicknamed the "Switzerland of Morocco" for its European-style chalets and manicured parks). Arrive in Fez, Morocco's spiritual and intellectual capital, for an evening walk through the lantern-lit medina lanes.

Day 6

Full Day in Fez

A full guided day in Fez el-Bali β€” the world's largest car-free medieval city and a UNESCO World Heritage site of 9,000 winding alleys, continuously inhabited for over 1,200 years. With a local licensed guide, visit the Al-Qarawiyyin University (founded 859 AD by Fatima al-Fihri β€” recognised by UNESCO as the world's oldest continuously operating university). The ornate 14th-century Bou Inania Madrasa displays some of the finest interiors in Morocco: walls of carved white stucco, Kufic calligraphy friezes, intricately carved cedarwood screens, and geometric zellige tiles around a central alabaster fountain. View the Chouara Tanneries from a rooftop terrace: workers stand barefoot in honeycomb stone vats dyeing leather with saffron (yellow), poppy (red), indigo (blue), and henna (brown) β€” a process unchanged since the 11th century. Explore the golden brass gates of the Royal Palace, the Mellah Jewish Quarter, and the Nejjarine woodworking museum. Browse artisan cooperative workshops.

Day 7

Fez to Chefchaouen

Drive northwest into the Rif Mountains β€” a geological range distinct from the Atlas, with dramatic landscapes of cedar and oak forest, deep valleys, and limestone ridges β€” to Chefchaouen, Morocco's legendary Blue Pearl. The tradition of painting the medina blue is said to have been introduced by Jewish Andalusian refugees in the 15th century, who painted walls in the colour of heaven as a spiritual act; over following centuries it spread until virtually every surface in the medina glowed in shades of azure and cobalt. Explore the 15th-century Kasbah and its ethnographic museum, the Uta el-Hammam central plaza, and artisan workshops producing handwoven woollen djellabas in natural plant dyes β€” saffron, walnut, and pomegranate. Climb to the Spanish Mosque at sunset for panoramic views over the blue-washed rooftops and Rif Mountain peaks. Enjoy an evening in one of Morocco's most atmospheric and visually extraordinary medinas.

Day 8

Return to Casablanca

Depart Chefchaouen in the morning and drive south through the Rif Mountain foothills β€” past the ancient city of Ksar el-Kebir on the Loukkos River plain and through the broad Atlantic agricultural plains of the Gharb. Stop at Volubilis (UNESCO Roman site, 10 minutes from the highway) or Meknes (Bab Mansour gateway, 15 minutes) time permitting for a final glimpse of Morocco's Roman and imperial heritage. Continue along the Atlantic plains to Casablanca. Private transfer to Mohammed V International Airport or city hotel to conclude an exhilarating 8-day journey through Morocco's mountains, desert, ancient imperial cities, and blue-painted Rif Mountain streets.
